But have you ever wondered how these long-lasting, all-natural treats are made? Well, let us walk you through the magical journey — from the Himalayan peaks of Nepal to your happy pup’s chew session!
🧀 What Exactly Are Yak Cheese Chews?
Yak cheese chews are age-old traditional treats made from yak and cow milk in the Himalayan region. The process involves boiling milk, curdling it with natural agents like lime, sun-drying, fermenting, and finally, smoking or air-drying the cheese into hard chewable sticks.
Let’s break it down step by step:
🥛 Step 1: It All Begins With Milk
Our chews start with fresh milk collected from small farmers living in the high-altitude areas of Nepal, especially around Ilam. This milk comes from Nak (female yaks) and Chhauri (a cross between yak and cow).
What makes this milk so special?
The secret lies in the unique Himalayan grass – Buggi – that these animals graze on at 3,500–4,000 meters above sea level. This rare grass is nutrient-rich and helps produce thicker, more flavorful milk – the perfect base for our Churpi!
🔥 Step 2: The Traditional Crafting Begins
Once the milk reaches our facility, the real magic starts. Using centuries-old Tibetan techniques, the milk is:
- Boiled for 45 minutes to an hour to separate the cream and fat.
- After cooling, skimmed milk is boiled again with a dash of whey, lime juice, and salt.
- This causes the milk to curdle naturally, forming cheese curds.
- These curds are collected into cotton bags and drained.
Did you know?
Salt not only helps in preservation but also improves texture and adds a slight natural flavor to the final chew!
🔧 Step 3: Pressing & Drying
Now it’s time to shape the cheese!
- The bags of curds are pressed under heavy weights for about 24 hours, squeezing out all the moisture.
- The resulting firm cheese blocks are then left to dry and ferment naturally for about 15–20 days.
- This step is crucial to develop the rich aroma and flavor dogs love — and also prevents mold.
🔥 Step 4: Smoking & Aging
Here’s where the chews get their irresistible hard texture and distinct smoky flavor.
- The dried blocks are cut into chew sizes – Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, and Jumbo.
- Then, they are smoked at low heat (around 95°F) for 12 days to 3 months, depending on the batch.
- After smoking, the sticks are air-dried for another month to remove the last bits of moisture.
✅ Final nutritional stats (on average):
- Protein: Over 50%
- Moisture: Max 14%
- Fat: Less than 1%
Now that’s what we call chew happy, chew healthy!
📦 Step 5: Quality Check, Packaging & Shipping
Once fully aged, the chews are:
- Sent to our warehouses for final quality checks and size sorting.
- Carefully packaged and shipped to our customers around the world.

🧠 FAQs About Yak Chews:
Q: Are yak cheese chews safe for puppies?
Yes – just make sure to pick the right size and supervise them while chewing. For teething puppies, soften the chew a bit before giving.
Q: Can my dog digest these chews?
Absolutely! They’re made from milk, and the fermentation process removes lactose – making them gentle on most dogs’ tummies.
Q: What if my dog chews off a small piece?
No worries! Once the chew gets too small, you can microwave it for a few seconds to puff it up like a crunchy cheese puff — dogs love it!
